Ski holidays in Chile: Spring-firn in October Chile is 4350 km long and extends from the border to Peru up to Tierra del Fuego. You can find the most different landscapes and all kind of climates: from the driest desert on earth to the glaciers in Patagonia, the mountains over 7000 meters of the Andes up to the sea. The central part of the country between Temuco and Puerto Mott is larded with national parks. These offer not only mountains, lakes, forests and fertile farmland but also a pleasant climate.
In addition there is a big chain of volcanoes, in October, the Chilean spring, very nice for mountaineering.
The highest object in our trip is the Lanin, 3777m, on the border between Argentina and Chile. Osorno and Villarica, already known names for mountaineer, are just two aims of the numerous places covered by Chilean firn. We are going to live in “haciendas”, small, pastoral idyllic houses, in addition it is planned to spent one night in a hotel in Santiago and one in a hut.
Requirements:
The volcanoes in Chile are technically simple, but should not be underestimated, since in the morning hours they are covered with hard firn, so that it requires an ascent on skis (in exceptional cases using the crampon). Each participant should be able to descent slopes with 35 degrees of steepness and to ascent more or less 1500 meters of altitude per day without any problems.
Program:
Day 1: Meeting-point in Munich and flight to Chile. Day 2: Arrival in Santiago in the morning; small city tour and flight to Temuco, where we sleep in a beautiful “Hacienda”. Day 3-5: To choose from the Lonquimay 2890m (ideal for entry into the Chilean mountain firn), the Lliama 3125m (descent of 1400m of altitude), the Sierra Nevada 2554m (adventurous approach and access through the jungle) and the Tolhuaca 2806m. To reach the starting points it will take last between 30 minutes an one hour and offer us the possibility to get to know land and its people. For relaxing after the tour, we are going to visit the hot springs of Malalcahuello. Day 6: After a short ski tour our trip goes on to the picturesque area around Pucon, at about 3 hours by car. Our next accommodation is located between two idyllic lakes with white sand beaches. The National Park Huerquehue, which is located near our accommodation, offers 1000-year-old stands of trees, crystal clear mountain lakes and several hot springs. Day 7 – 8: A skiing adventure, the mighty volcano Lanin 3777m. It takes two days and 2800 meters of altitude to ascent. Halfway up we sleep in a shelter to stay protected. Day 9: Another great volcano for skiing is the Villarica 2847m. The fumarole are highly visible and from the crater rim you have a fascinating view to the inside of the volcano. Day 10: The Quetrupillán 2360m, located next to Villarica. Day 11: We move to Puerto Octay on Lake Llanquihue. Day 12: Probably the most beautiful glaciated volcano, the Osorno 2650m: the view from the summit is awesome. Day 13: A short, final trip on the Casablanca and then Puerto Mott. Day 14: Flight back to Santiago, check in at the hotel and sightseeing. Day 15: Flight back home. Day 16: Arrival in Europe and individual journey home.
