For ski tourers, the allure of Norway in winter remains unmatched: the snow is exceptional, the fjord landscape is breathtaking and the light north of the Arctic Circle is truly unique. It has become rare to find a quieter destination that combines all of these features and where not every slope has been tracked. On Senja, however, we have found exactly that.
In fact, we’d almost prefer not to promote this hidden gem, just to preserve its character and keep it free from the crowds that plague other Norwegian destinations. Senja is Norway’s second-largest island and can be easily accessed via a bridge from the mainland. Visitors will find charming villages, welcoming hotels, well-maintained roads (with plenty of tunnels) and a strong fishing culture, which remains the island’s main economic backbone.
Ski touring on Senja is often compared to the Lofoten Islands: peaks rising 600–900 metres directly above the deep blue sea; countless tour options that can be combined in a single day; birch trees only at lower elevations; and wide, open slopes that are perfect for skiing – with snow right down to the shoreline. What more could you ask for? How about a cold beer in our cosy lodge after the tour?
Our lodge was once a traditional fisherman’s house and has been beautifully renovated. It offers everything you need after a long day in the snow, including warm and inviting communal areas, and a kitchen where we can prepare breakfast and often cook dinner together.
