Svaneti: The first thing that catches your eye in every village are the countless defensive towers rising into the sky. These towers give this archaic landscape its unique character. Behind them, the snow-covered peaks of the Bezengi Wall stretch over 12 kilometres wide and reach heights of more than 5,200 metres. It's a backdrop that makes you pause and take a deep breath.
It is only on second glance that you begin to notice the incredible ski terrain, with its perfect snow slopes and ideal ski touring peaks set against the dramatic ice and rock giants of Ushba and Shkhara.
If the mountains of Svaneti were more accessible, the region would have become one of the world's top ski touring destinations long ago – the conditions are simply perfect. The town of Mestia has already evolved into a small 'Chamonix of the Caucasus', complete with a growing infrastructure of charming hotels, restaurants, cafés and bars. This development is largely driven by the nearby Tetnuldi Ski Resort rather than by the relatively small number of ski tourers.
In contrast, life in Ushguli feels far more traditional. This group of four villages, located at an altitude of 2,200 metres at the head of the Enguri Valley, was completely cut off during the winter until just a few years ago. The inhabitants lived self-sufficiently, as they had for generations. Today, the road is well maintained, allowing access throughout most of the winter.
As part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ushguli offers simple, authentic guesthouses and exceptional hospitality. We set off directly from here on our ski tours. The possibilities are endless – it is a true paradise for ski tourers and adventure travellers alike.
