The small island of Kalymnos, located in the Aegean Sea, is not widely known among trekking enthusiasts. If it is known at all, it is usually because of the countless climbing routes that have been established there over the last two decades.
During our various climbing trips, we discovered everything needed for a trekking adventure on this island. We created the individual stages of this route step by step, leading through completely untouched and largely deserted parts of the island, often alongside wild and unspoilt cliff coastlines just above the turquoise sea. The route features short and easy climbing sections on the ascent, as well as abseils over impressive cave overhangs.
The Greek sun is a constant companion, while the ever-present dry wind provides pleasant trekking temperatures. The beautiful, secluded coves along the route provide welcome opportunities to swim and relax.
On two nights, we sleep under the starry sky in our sleeping bags in wonderfully remote bays. The other evenings are spent in a pleasant studio which is very clean and well managed. This also serves as our base and starting point for the remaining tours.
At the two secluded spots by the sea, a local fishing boat supplies us with already prepared Greek specialities. On the evenings when we stay in our accommodation, we can explore the island's culinary highlights in nearby restaurants and tavernas.
A particular highlight of the week is the trekking tour on the neighbouring island of Telendos, which is just a 10- to 15-minute boat ride away. Originally connected to Kalymnos, it was permanently separated by an earthquake in 554 AD. We have also largely established this beautiful route, which perfectly rounds off the overall Kalymnos experience while leaving you wanting more. Our fantastic breakfast is served on the terrace and leaves nothing to be desired.
Arrival: flight to Kos – then by local bus or taxi in about 10 minutes to the port of Mastichari – followed by a 35-minute ferry crossing to Kalymnos.
