The Dauphiné Alps are considered to be one of the wildest and most pristine mountain regions in the Alps. This is reflected in the dramatic, steep summits flanked by hanging glaciers and sharp rock pinnacles for which the region is named.
At the heart of this range lies the picturesque alpine village of Ailefroide, which is the perfect base for high-alpine mountaineering adventures. The itinerary includes ascents of two of the region's classic summits: Mont Pelvoux and the southernmost 4,000-metre peak in the Alps, Barre des Écrins — both outstanding summits in true alpine terrain.
