The Ahrntal, located in the northern part of South Tyrol, is renowned for its abundant snowfall and excellent ski touring opportunities. This valley, which is deeply cut into the main Alpine ridge, receives fresh snow from both Genoa lows and bad weather fronts coming from the north.

As ski tourers, we can consider ourselves lucky that the Ahrntal not only has plenty of snow, but also stretches over 50 kilometres and offers countless touring possibilities on both sides of the valley. Depending on the weather and avalanche risk level, we can either tackle the challenging 3,000-metre peaks at the end of the valley, or enjoy shorter powder tours in Weißenbach. There, the forest provides orientation in fog and the open mountain huts offer refreshments.

It is a great advantage for us GLOBO mountain guides that the Ahrntal was, so to speak, the sandbox of our early ski touring days and later became the playground for ambitious tours. Or, as they say in the South Tyrolean dialect: “Do sein mir Dahoam!”

As local mountain guides, we cannot influence the weather any more than 'outsiders', but a little 'insider knowledge' does give us hope of finding the odd untouched slope.

On the first night, we stay at the Bühelwirt, which impresses in many ways. The modern new building is connected to the traditional main house and offers excellent South Tyrolean cuisine, a stylish wellness area and the option to choose between two room categories in either the new or old buildings.
